Anapen Update

As most of you are aware the product ‘Anapen‘ has returned to the Australian market. Trainers should be teaching familiarity with both Anapens and Epipens; both should be available for demonstration and discussion during courses. Please familiarise yourself with the Anapen product and trainer instructions which are available below:

Pool Lifeguard Expiry & Re-accreditation Timeframe (Grace period)

Currently RLSSQ allows a student 90 day period to complete a Pool Lifeguard Re-accreditation (often referred to as a Grace Period). During this 90 day period, the lifeguard should not be working. The 90 day policy is unique to Queensland and does not exist in other States, it is also not compliant with the GSPO. Regulators are looking at lifeguard training (and in-service training records) when an incident occurs, and we have found many lifeguards have not completed Professional Development (PD) including in-service training, which is dictated within the GSPO that Lifeguards must be completing. Meaning if a lifeguard completes a re-accreditation after a certificate expires (i.e. 1.25 years) with no PD, it is placing the risk back to RLSSQ and the Trainer for litigation.

For the above reasons and to align with other states, we wish to advise that we are changing this policy commencing from 15 August 2022. Students will need to apply for approval if they wish to complete a Pool Lifeguard Re-accreditation Course after the expiry of their current certification. To assist, we have developed a form: Form: Request to sit re-accreditation after expiry of Pool Lifeguard Certificate for participants to complete. Please ensure you inform all your Pool Lifeguard Participants of this change moving forward.

We will be communicating this to all Pool Lifeguard students from July 2022 by an email campaign.

Statement on the delivery of First Aid Training (COVID-19 Adjustments)

The below statement comes into effect from 1 September 2022.

As you would know, during the COVID-19 pandemic changes were made to training activities for public health purposes (i.e. simulated breaths in CPR). The First Aid Industry Reference Committee and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) has reconsidered this advice and has advised that all reasonable adjustments implemented during the pandemic should now be removed.

This means that training and assessment activities undertaken during First Aid and CPR courses will revert to pre-COVID conditions. Specifically, learners will be required to demonstrate rescue breathing techniques on manikins (and not simulated skills) as previously allowed during the pandemic. Learners will not be exempt from providing rescue breaths if they wish to gain a competent result in the Unit of Competency and/or qualification.

Additionally, any other adjustments that RTOs may have made during the COVID-19 pandemic should be reviewed to ensure the integrity of the Unit of Competency and/or qualification is upheld. As an example, skills such as auto-injector administration and bleeding control should be demonstrated on another person (a ‘casualty’), not themselves.

Please continue to review your infection control procedures and ensure that manufacturer guidelines regarding hygiene, cleaning and disinfecting of CPR manikins and equipment are followed.

Course Outlines

We are pleased to advise that we have released new Course Outlines, which can be accessed at this link:

The Course Outlines have been updated to have a modern and fresh look, whilst maintaining compliance with RTO disclosure requirements. Our Course Outlines can be viewed at this link.

Participant bookings

Please ensure any participant that is attending a course is registered (electronically) at www.lifesavingtraining.com.au. There has been an increased number of participants not being electronically registered in to courses. Electronic registration allows for quick issuance of certificates. If we need to rely on the paper workbooks, this causes delays and sometime non-issuance of certificates if we cannot make contact with the participant.

Pool Lifeguard – First Aid Pre-requisites

We ask Trainers to check that all participants hold the required pre-requisites prior to attending. We are receiving a large number of workbooks returned by trainers to find that participants are completing a Pool Lifeguard course without having a First Aid certificate. We are contacting the student to obtain a copy of the pre-requisite, however many students claim they have not been advised. It is good practice for Trainers to receive a copy of any pre-requisites and attach them to the participants workbook before sending.
