Trainers Update May 2023

May 2023 Water Safety Forum

On 15 & 16 May 2023 Leaders from across government, academia aquatic representatives and water safety organisations gathered at the two-day forum to target the causes of drowning in South East Queensland and improved standards for the aquatic industry. New research showing 366 people had drowned in the past 10 years just in South East Queensland, making it a drowning blackspot, prompted the Royal Life Saving to convene the forum.

The Water Safety Forum was an enlightening event that brought together representitives from various fields to discuss and address crucial aspects of water safety and industry standards. The forum provided a platform on topics such as drowning prevention, aquatic facility safety and best practice. Notable highlights included engaging panel discussions with industry leaders, informative presentations on the latest research and innovations, and interactive workshops that offered recommended stratergies. The forum fostered valuable networking opportunities, allowing representatives to exchange ideas and collaborate on inniatives aimed at enhancing water safety, aquatic facility safety and best practice. Overall, the Water Safety Forum proved to be a valuable gathering, empowering attendees with knowledge and inspiring collective action to protect lives in Queensland.

Professional Development

At this link you will find an example of Professional Development (PD) including a reflection/journal entry for an article. Workplace activities require evidence such as a letter from an employer with statement of duties or activities and as much supporting evidence as possible. Please provide certificates from approved seminar / conferences / workshops.

All trainers will need to supply a Professional Development log by 30 June 2023. We are currently creating a Trainers Hub to help trainers with PD opportunities and accessing training resources.

Paper-Based vs. Blended Courses

Please remember when booking in courses that you are only able to book either all blended or all paper-based on one day, you can not mix blended and paper-based courses on the same day. This is because participants completing blended courses will have done the knowledge online prior to the practical face-to-face component, where as participants completing the paper based will be completing the full knowledge and practical component face-to-face.

RLSSQ RTO Operations

Following a review of our RTO operations, we have made some small changes in our paper based workbooks, these include:

1. Updated the Privacy Notice (very minor updates)
2. Changed the Reasonable Adjustment panel to include LLN information
3. Amended the Student Agreement (removing the COVID clause) and some other minor changes
4. Some wording change to the wording on the Assessment Outcome Statement
5. Some minor changes to the Assessment Outline page

These Changes will not impact trainers, however we wanted to bring them to your attention as you may notice the changes when you order workbooks.

RTO Renewal and Audit

The expiry date of our RTO is coming up on 31 August 2023, and we have already applied to renew our RTO registration. We may be required to provide to ASQA or be audited. As you would know from the trainers workshop, we have been reviewing all of our policies and procedures to ensure they are at the standard needed and we feel we are ready for an RTO audit if it occurs. We will let you know how the renewal proceeds as soon as we have updated information.

Trainer and Assessor Network Meeting

We will be aiming to hold the Trainer and Assessor Network Meeting on the 12th & 13th August 2023 dependent on the new sports unit being rolled out by this time. All trainers wishing to continue training with the new units will need to attend these courses to upgrade to the new units of competence. The new units are not equivalent to the currently used. If trainers are not able to attend this workshop they can register in a public RLSSQ course to upgrade to the new units. The usual course fee will apply to those courses.
